Careers for CNC Machine Operators

  1. Computer numerical control (CNC) machine operators are the machinists of the future. Rather than operating machine tools by hand, CNC operators use computer programming in precision manufacturing. CNC operators will see a growth in their field of 7 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Compare this to a decline of 5 percent in the same time period for machinists. For those interested in the CNC field, it is worth knowing what careers exist for CNC machine operators.

    Machinist

  2. Machinists are those who input information into CNC lathes and milling machines. As a CNC machinist, you will have the most hands-on of any CNC machine operation career. You will be the closest to the finished product. In addition to CNC programming, you will also need to know how to select cutting tools, read plans, set up the machine and take precision measurements. investment casting, investment castings , Metal Castings , Aluminum casting

    Programmer

  3. While all CNC machine operators can be said to be programmers in as much as they program the machines, a CNC programmer per se is slightly different. The programs you write will have a higher degree of complexity than the ones written by more basic CNC machinists. You will write programs that tackle complex problems in CNC machining such as cutting products that have intricate features and surfaces of four axes or above.

    Prototype Engineer

  4. Prototype engineers work making a single model of an object so that it can be tested. The prototype is not made of the same material as the final object. Instead, it is often made of substances like wax, foam, plastic or other non-metal materials. This prototype may be full-size or a scaled-down version of the object. This position works best for someone with skills in sculpting and sketching. You will also be called upon to demonstrate how the object works either with CNC machines or your own hands.

    Systems Technician

  5. CNC systems technicians work with multiple machines. You will be required to set up, program, maintain and perhaps operate a number of automated manufacturing equipment. Frequently, systems technicians have to know how to operate not just a large number of machines at once, but a diverse number of machines all performing different functions. Systems techs should have training in fields such as hydraulics and pneumatics.

    Specializations

  6. Some CNC machinists begin as basic machinists and become specialists in a certain type of CNC programming rather than moving onto more complicated fields such as systems technician. You may choose to specialize in making tools and dyes or plastic molds. There are also specializations in different types of materials.
