Types of Metal Casting

  • Metal casting involves pouring liquefied metal into a mold to create a metal part. The mold usually takes the form of a complex shape. You will find metal castings in trucks, mining and oil field equipment, internal combustion engines, pumps and compressors, railroad equipment and farm machinery. Iron, aluminum, steel and copper-base alloys are often used in metal casting.

    Sand Casting

  • In sand casting, you make your mold out of a sand mixture, either using a pattern or creating the mold by hand then pouring the molten metal into the sand cavity. These molds allow you to cast large parts and use metal containing iron, as well as non-ferrous metals. This type of metal casting is the most cost efficient, producing small batches of metal casting parts, usually less than 100. The tools required to make a sand casting also cost less than other metal casting tools. However, sand casting produces parts that usually weigh more than their calculated weight and don't give you the same dimensional accuracy as other types of metal casting. investment casting, investment castings , Metal Castings , Aluminum casting

    Plaster Casting

  • Plaster casting uses a plaster mold to shape the melted metal. Since these molds are simple to craft, you can easily replace one if the metal casting damages the mold during the removal process. Use plaster casting with metal alloys based on aluminum, zinc and copper to make lock components, fittings, gears, ornaments and values. This type of metal casting enables you to make complex shapes with thin walls and fine details. While this metal casting process costs more than sand casting, it provides better accuracy.

    Die Casting

  • Die casting entails shooting melted metal into the closed, lubricated cavities of your mold under high pressure. This high pressure must be maintained throughout the casting process. The process works well and cost efficiently when producing large quantities of small- or medium-sized pieces that require find detail such as toy cars.

    Permanent Mold Casting

  • Once used to make bullet castings, permanent mold casting involves affixing two halves of a mold and pouring molten metal into the mold through a hole. The metal cools and the two halves are broken apart to remove the casting. Though this type of metal casting produces dense, pressure-tight castings and costs less than die casting, you can only use non-ferrous metals.
